Eminem

Everyone has their own taste in music. Usually you can tell a person’s taste of music just by what they wear, or how they talk when you’re near them. Some people’s taste of music can be very obvious just by a simple hair color or cut. My taste of music, you would probably never guess, and you might even find it interesting and amusing at the same time. I am in love with rap.

My love for this type of music started when I turned 12 years old, and my Aunt bought me my first Eminem CD. From that day on, I was addicted to Eminem’s words and beats.

Eminem is just the man’s nickname. Eminem’s real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers the Third. Eminem was born on October 17, 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. Marshall didn’t have such a good childhood; his mother was very poor and they were forced to move to several different homes, until Marshall turned 12 and they had moved to Detroit, Michigan, for good (Parker).

Marshall took up rapping in high school, just before he dropped out of school in the ninth grade. At the age of fourteen, Eminem had already started rap battles underground against other Detroit MCs. He married a lady named Kim Briggs. A few years later, their daughter Hailie Jade Mathers was born (Parker).

In 1996, Eminem’s debut album “Infinite” came out. In February of 1999, Eminem’s second album came out. “The Slim Shady LP” was a huge hit, including the hit song, “My Name Is.” In year 2000, Eminem’s second album, “The Marshall Mathers LP” hit the stands. In the first week of seeling, there were over two million copies sold. This album included the song “The Real Slim Shady,” which caused a monstrous out roar of public hatred towards Eminem. People did not like the way that Eminem spoke in his songs, such as making fun of other artists (Parker).

If I didn't, then my producers were going to give up on the whole rap thing we were doing. I made some shit that I wanted to hear. The Slim Shady EP, I lashed out on everybody who talked shit about me.”

“I do feel like I'm coming from a standpoint where people don't realize there are a lot of poor white people,” he explained in a magazine article in the Source. “Rap music kept my mind off all the bullshit I had to go through.”

Somehow that did not bother Eminem, and he just kept on moving, while at the same time, appearing in many Grammy nominations in 2001. At the Grammys ceremony, Eminem did a duet performance with Elton John, singing the song “Stan” (Parker).

In 2002, “The Eminem Show” was released. This album contained Eminem’s most popular songs to this day, such as “Cleaning Out My Closet,” “Sing for the Moment,” “Til I Collapse,” and “My Dad’s Gone Crazy,” which included Hailie Jade singing with her father (Parker).

“I do say things that I think will shock people,” he says. “But I don't do things to shock people. I'm not trying to be the next Tupac, but I don't know how long I'm going to be on this planet. So while I'm here, I might as well make the most of it.”

A few years back, Eminem starred in his own hit movie, “8 Mile.” When this movie came out into theaters, I was the most upset person, because I was only in the eighth grade, and I was sure enough not old enough to see it. In the movies, Eminem is stuck in his own neighborhood. He wants to get out of town, but without any money or anything to his name, that seems almost impossible. The setting of the movie is similar to Eminem’s life as a kid: a trailer park and some very mean, dark people. His mother is a mess in the movie also (Parker).

Eminem has many enemies to this day. He still talks about his enemies in his songs, and there are lots of people who make the time to talk a bunch of crap on him.

“I don't think I take the beef as seriously as they do, because I don't consider them artists. They look at me as an artist. I think they get more uptight about it. I can look at them and laugh. They can't do anything to me. What can they do to me? They have no credibility, no respect, no talent, they have nothing. All they can do is diss me vocally, they can't diss me lyrically. There's nothing they can do to me as far as the music goes. I don't take it as seriously as they do and I think that frustrates them. I think it's funny.”

Tom Petty

Another musical artist that I like very well would be a man by the name of Tom Petty. Petty was born and raised in the northern portion of Florida. He began playing music at the age of seventeen, while still in high school. Once Petty got so into music, he ended up dropping out of high school (Erlewine).

When Petty dropped out of high school, he joined a band named “Mudcrutch,” which included Mike Campbell, guitarist, and Benmont Tench, keyboardist. The three boys moved to Los Angeles in nineteen seventy, with high hopes of getting onto a record contract. A record company by the name of Shelter Records offered Mudcrutch a contract. This record company was founded by Denny Cordell and Leon Russell (Erlewine).

Shortly after being signed onto the contract, the three boys of Mudcrutch parted. Denny Cordell offered to still work solo with Tom, but Tom refused the offer for the time being. Petty tried out a few other bands, but nothing seemed to be working out, so he got back together with Benmont and Mike in nineteen seventy – five (Erlewine).

Sooner than later, Tom Petty was a part of the team again, and a band was created with the name of “The Heartbreakers.” With Tom’s addition to the band in nineteen seventy - six, the band’s name became “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.” Within just a few months of touring in England, the band’s popularity shot up. The band’s first album was on the top charts at number thirty in the United Kingdom, and their hit song “Breakdown” became a top forty hit (Erlewine).

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ second album was released in 1978. This album was such a big hit that the album became the group’s first American Top Forty record. Shortly after, in the middle of nineteen seventy – nine, the band’s record company was bought out and slowly went downhill, until the company hit bankruptcy (Erlewine).

Once the record label went bankrupt, the boys decided to keep on trying to succeed. In 1979, Tom signed with a record company by the name of “Backstreet Records.” Petty’s first big hit from Backstreet Records was, “Damn the Torpedoes.” This song had amazing reviews and likings. The song made it to the Top Ten hit, and spent seven weeks at the number two spot on the United States charts. In nineteen eighty-one, “Hard Promises” was the next big hit for The Heartbreakers (Erlewine).

Mr. Petty became a member of another group by the name of “The Traveling Wilburys” in 1988. This all happened at the timing that Petty wanted to become solo, so this addition to the band was a good start for him. In nineteen eighty – nine, Petty’s first solo effort, “Full Moon Fever,” reached number three on the U.S. charts (Erlewine).

After his first solo went triple platinum, Petty had a few other top charted songs. Some of these songs included “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” and my personal favorite, “Free Fallin’.” In nineteen ninety – three, Petty had another hit by the name os “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” (Erlewine).

Petty’s latest album was the soundtrack for the Edward Burns film, “She’s the One.” This album peaked at number fifteen on the U.S. charts (Erlewine).

How to Use an IPod

I am a huge fan of music, therefore when I am driving, it is a requirement to have some sort of music on. A few years ago, I got very tired of making tons of compact disks, because you can only fit sixteen to eighteen songs on the disk. I am the type of person that cannot listen to the same song over and over.

In 2004, I went to Wal-Mart with my saved up money, and I bought myself my very own IPod. My first IPod was an IPod Mini, and it was a really pretty blue color. It was shiny and it only held 500 songs.

I could not stand to only have 500 songs, so just two years ago I went to Wal-Mart and bought an IPod video. My IPod video is very nice, with a big screen, and it is white. I even got a case to hold it in, because I cannot stand scratches on my nice things. I bought a cord at Wal-Mart that plugs into my power outlet in my car and plays thru any radio station I choose.

IPods are not even that hard to use. All it takes is a little computer common sense. An IPod comes with a disk with a computer program called “ITunes” on it. You just simply stick the disk into your computer and let the program download. Once it is downloaded, you are free to add any music files that you want to add into your music library. You can make your own music play lists, and rename all of your files to anything you want. ITunes is very nice in that aspect, because I like to have everything my own certain and unique way.

When on the ITunes program, you can click “File” on the top left, and go down to “Add File to Library”. At that point you would go into your “Documents” folder, and click on “Music.” Once the Music folder is opened, you just simply choose which song you would like to have in your library. Once you choose which song you would like to have in your music library, you would highlight that song, and click the “Open” button.

Once you have all of your songs in your library that you want in there, you go and grab your white IPod cord that comes in the box when you buy the IPod. One side of the cord plugs into your computer, in the USB slot. The other side of the cord plugs into the bottom of the IPod. The slot in the bottom of the IPod is also where you can plug in the charger.

Components of a Drum Set

A drum set is a percussion instrument. The instrument comes in many pieces, the number of pieces varying with the many different types of drum sets. The drum set that I own has five different pieces.

The five pieces consist of three tom toms, a bass, a snare, and two cymbals. Tom toms are the three smaller drums that sit directly in front of you when playing. The sounds of these drums differ with the different sizes, the smallest one being the highest pitch. The bass is the largest piece of the set, and is so large that the pitch is very deep and low. There is a small pedal in front of the snare to hit it with your foot while playing. The snare drum is the center drum of the set. This piece is the main drum that you bang on. The cymbals are the two metal flat pieces on either side of you, also called “The Ride” and “The Crash.”

What I like most about my drum set is how I can just use my imagination to make up any type of beat that I want. I can make many beats that are very fast, and very slow also. I like trying to make a transition between the two; it’s interesting to see what I can come up with!

Ring Tones

If you have a cell phone, you already know what a ring tone is. If you do not have one, a ring tone is a melody that plays on your cell phone when someone calls you.

Ring tones can be a variety of different songs. Just about any song in the world can be turned into a ring tone. For instance, my ring tone on my cellular phone is “Stop and Stare” by One Republic. It is very easy for one to buy a ring tone and apply it to their cellular phone. For example, my cellular provider is Cingular. All that I have to do is go to Cingular’s web site and click on “Ring tones.” From clicking that link, a page pops up with thousands of options of different songs to choose from.

Once you choose what song you would like as your ring tone, you can click on that, and just simply enter your cellular phone number. At that very moment, a text message is sent to your cellular phone, with a code to download your ring tone into your cellular phone. After the ring tone is downloaded into your cellular, you can apply it to your phone to use at certain times, to certain people, or just as an all-the-time ring tone.

Miley Ray Cyrus

Born on November 23, 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee, is Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter, Destiny Hope Cyrus. A few years ago, Destiny got her name legally changed to Miley Ray Cyrus, because when she was young, everyone called her “Smiley” (Buchanon).

In 2006, Miley began her popularity starring on the main role of Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana.” When Destiny was only seven years of age, she had tried out for the spot on Hannah Montana. The producers who auditioned her saved the part for her especially, when she was old enough to do that part. She continued after Hannah Montana to perform a small part in Disney Channel’s “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” (Buchanon).

Miley Ray Cyrus is now America’s number one pop star, and had the number one most selling concert tour in the United States. She has the number one selling CD (Buchanon).

Man vs Man; Man vs Self (Poetry)

In our poetry section, we read a lot of different types of poems. I particularly liked the poems written by Robert Frost the most. Robert Frost had a way of writing like no other poet had. Amazingly, I understood all of Frost’s poems!

In Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” there is a large matter of Man vs. Self in the poem. The poem talks of Frost’s younger years, when he was growing up, trying to choose which road to take in life. One road is full of pretty trees and has been walked on over and over, with lots of footprints. The other road is very bare and looks just like it has not yet been walked on.

When Frost is in the middle of his poem, he does decide to walk down one road, and the road he chooses is the one that is full of pretty trees and has been walked on over and over. Towards the end of the poem, Frost is in his older years, and he begins to wonder what would have happened if he had taken the road that had not been walked on at all.

Frost is wondering what his life would had been had he taken the “road not taken.” At the end of the poem is the very popular line, “and that has made all the difference.” In the poem, we never know whether Frost is happy that he took this road, or unhappy. He never expresses his feelings, except for what he wonders about. That is where the Man vs. Self comes into play.

In another poem by Robert Frost, Frost is talking of Man vs. Man. The name of the poem is “Mending Wall.”

In this poem, there are two neighbors that have lived next to each other for a long time, but have never talked of anything except their apple trees and pine cone trees. The neighbor wants to put a wall up in the middle of the two yards, but Frost does not understand why he would need a wall to block them, if they are not enemies.

Frost asks the neighbor why he might need a wall between them, and the neighbor just keeps on stating “a good wall makes a good friend.” Frost does not understand what the man means, which is where Man vs. Man comes into play.

In the poem there is one spot that is meant for a big part of humor, where Robert Frost states “offense.” Frost meant this word in two ways; offense, and a fence.

In these two poems we have read, we cover Man vs. Man and Man vs. Self in these poems. Man vs. Man is in Frost’s “Mending Wall.” Man vs. Self is in Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.”

I was only feeling left out when the three of us went out like twice and all you two would talk about is stuff that you guys had done earlier that week. I have already told you that. I am not 12 years old anymore Carly I understand you have other friends, I was just hoping that you could understand that I have other friends too. If I recall it was you who got pissed that I moved you down on MySpace Top Friends. I'm sorry that I don't have the time or the energy to deal with this/talk about it aparently like "a true friend" would. When I have classes, tests, family problems and someone close to me dies and you are not my number one priority you need to deal with it and I am not sorry for that.

The statue was worshiped as the giver of civilization, and Athena was represented as the goddess of wisdom, household arts, crafts, spinning, weaving and textiles. The statue also symbolizes the Roman "goddess of war" because Athena was the guardian of Athens. The city of Athens was named after Athena.

The Yearling

The author of The Yearling, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, was born in 1896 in Washington, DC. By the age of six, Marjorie was already interested in writing. In 1918, Marjorie graduated from the University of Wisconsin, on her path to being a journalist. Rawlings wrote many books in her time, but there is still and always will be one book that sticks out from the rest (Wikipedia).

Marjorie wrote The Yearling in 1938. The Yearling is about a young boy and his family, living in the southern Florida woodlands and prairies. The Yearling takes place in the late 1800s, in Florida’s “Big Scrub,” between Ocklawaha and St. Johns River. The young boy’s name is Jody Baxter. Jody’s father’s name is Penny, and his mother’s is Ma. Grandma Hutto is Penny’s mother, and Jody has taken a liking to her most. The Baxters’ neighbors’ names are Fodder-wing, Ma, and Pa Forrester. The Baxters own a small farm for family food intake, and have a cow named Betsy. Jody loves hunting with Penny, therefore, they have a hunting dog named Old Julia (LiteraryTraveler, Hills, McGraw, Rawlings).

One day while out hunting, Penny gets bit by a rattlesnake that jumped out of the bushes like nothing, and Jody has to rush into town to get him help, as soon as possible. They get him some help and Penny is going to be okay, but just as that all happens, Jody comes across a little fawn in the woods. He could tell immediately that the fawn had been abandoned by its mother. Jody knows nothing else to do but to take it home to take care of it (BOOK.)

Jody named the little fawn Flag. Flag lived with Jody for about a year, and Jody loved that deer like nothing before. His parents were not too fond of the deer all along, but just when Flag started eating all of the Baxters’ crops and make a huge mess out of the farm, Jody’s father forces him to make a decision he never wanted to have to make. He must somehow get rid of Flag. Jody was not dumb, for he knew that the only solution to completely “get rid” of Flag, was to have to shoot him (Rawlings).

Jody came to his senses and decided he had to shoot him after all, and so he did. He buries Flag in his yard, only to keep the memories (Rawlings).

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings also explained how she used different memories of her childhood in Florida in her book. In an article in the Voice of Media radio broadcast station, she states,

“I remember a very special sort of April day, the day I describe in the first chapter of The Yearling. I remember the delirious excitement I felt. And at the height of my delight, . . . I understood suddenly that . . . beyond this carefree moment life was waiting with its responsibilities. . . . As I became a writer, I thought back often to that April day and . . . write a story about the job of childhood, and the strange foreknowledge of maturity.”

After graduating from Wisconsin University, Marjorie moved to New York City, where she went on to continue in her writing career path. She soon married a man named Charles Rawling, and the two moved to Kentucky and both got jobs as local newspaper editors. When 1928 came around, the two were tired of living in Kentucky, and ended up moving to Cross Creek in central Florida. Marjorie’s next twenty-five years of living in Cross Creek were spent writing about her experiences in Florida. In 1953, at the age of fifty-seven, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings died of a cerebral Hemorrhage (Hills, McGraw).

The Yearling was made into a movie in the year of 1946. The film’s three main actors and actresses include Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman, and Claude Jarman Jr. The film runs a little longer than an hour and a half, and is in black and white. It was directed by Clarence Brown, and is in the family/drama category (Internet Movie Database Inc.).

Pulitzer Prizes are annual awards for achievements in American journalism, letters, drama and music. The prizes have been awarded by Columbia University in New York City since 1917, on the recommendation of a Pulitzer Prize Board. Fourteen prizes are given in journalism. The award is named after Joseph Pulitzer, American newspaper publisher, who endowed the journalism school and the awards (Sharon Jones).

The Yearling won the Pulitzer Prize in 1939, for Best Novel (Wu, Ona).

I thought the Yearling was a really great book. I read the book once before in my tenth grade year, in Mr. Harper’s class. I get very easily attached to any book that is about any type of animal, because I love animals.

I loved the way that Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote the book. I loved her style, her choice of words, and all of the adventurous paragraphs she took me through. I don’t know why, but I understood all of the “Southern” talk, because it’s easy to sound out. I talk like that sometimes just to have fun.

I thought that parts of the book were really funny, like when Jody and his mom, Ma, joked around accordingly to the scene of the book. All of the jokes and love between father and son made me think of my Dad at times. He always loves to joke around with me, and I will always remember that throughout my life, just like Jody probably will.

I have a dog at home named Abbie, and it reminds me of Flag, because Flag follows Jody everywhere he goes. Abbie is always by my side, even each night. I love my dog more than anything in the world, just like Jody loved Flag.

If I had to recommend any book to read, since I cannot stand reading, I would definitely choose this book. I’d tell anyone who looks at it, that it’s an awesome book, and if you love animals, then you will be set!

Laptop Computers

In every room of my house, we have something similar. My mom, my dad, my sister and I all have a laptop of our own. A laptop has a lot of different parts to make it all one great machine. Some parts include the screen, the keyboard, and the mouse.

A laptop’s screen is where you can view anything and everything that you want in the world. The screens come in many different sizes, such as 15.4 inches, 17 inches, and 19 inches. The screens have a plastic cover to protect the small chips inside to make a picture. The laptop’s screen is the only place you can view anything.

A keyboard is probably the second most important part of a laptop. The keyboard contains about 100 keys, including each letter of the alphabet, every number, and certain symbols that we use in every day life, such as commas, exclamation marks, question marks, and periods. The keyboard allows you to enter any information you want, such as essays and reports for school on Microsoft Word. You can also search for certain information on the internet by typing internet addresses on the address bar, and by searching for certain things on Google.

The third most important part of a computer is the mouse. The mouse is a small square piece on the bottom of the laptop. You simply slide your finger across the top of the piece to make a small arrow on the screen come to life. You can click on the left side off the mouse clickers to select something. If you click on the right side of the mouse clickers, you get a pop up menu with many options, such as copy, paste, and print selection. A mouse controls the computer, which is pretty cool.

All-in-all, a laptop computer consists of three major parts; the screen, the keyboard, and the mouse. All together, these three things make an awesome machine that helps you in every way possible. You can do research projects, some video fun, and many other things on your own personal laptop computer.

Methamphetamine

When you go into a drugstore, you know there is a pharmacy in the back somewhere. As you step up to the pharmacy counter, you can see hundreds of boxes of behind-the-counter medicine. These drugs, such as Psuedophedrine , Aleve-D, Claritin-D, or Drixoral, can be combined together to make a drug called “Methamphetamine.”

Methamphetamine is commonly known as “speed,” “meth,” and “chalk.” In its smoked form, it can be referred to as “ice,” “crystal,” “crank,” and “glass.” Methamphetamine’s chemical structure is very similar to amphetamine, which is normally used as a nasal decongestant and a bronchial inhaler. There is only one major difference. Methamphetamine has many more effects on the central nervous system, and the effects can last for about 6 to 8 hours at a time.

In World War II, the German soldiers used methamphetamine to stay awake for long periods of time, and to keep themselves alert at every second. Our American soldiers found out about the drug, and began to use it during the war also. The drug finally traveled over to the United States after the war.

Methamphetamine is only available through a prescription from a doctor, and it cannot be refilled, only because of the sole purpose that its use can be highly abused. Some things that methamphetamine can treat include narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder, and for a short-term use, obesity. These medical uses are limited each time.

Methamphetamine can be used in a number of ways, such as smoking, snorting, orally ingested, or injection. This drug can alter your mood in many different ways, depending on how it is taken, such as making you very happy and jittery, or making you very depressed and having the urge to kill yourself. According to the 2000 Drug Abuse Warning Network, an estimated 8.8 million people have tried methamphetamine at some point in their lives. 8.8 million is equal to about 4% of the population.

When methamphetamine is put into a person’s body, they immediately experience a “rush” throughout the body that is described as being very pleasurable for a few minutes at a time. Some short-term effects of taking methamphetamine include wakefulness, lowered physical activity, and decreased appetite. Some rushes can last for over half a day.

Some long-term affects of methamphetamine include addiction, violent behavior, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. Meth can also cause paranoia, hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions.

Futures - Fantasy and Fact

10 years from now, I would like to live in Virginia, in a really nice neighborhood with a two-story house. I want to have a really light colored Golden Retriever named Daisy. I want to have a really cute husband and one little girl named Rochelle.

10 years from now, if I was still living how I am now, I’d be stuck in high school, working at Walgreens as a cosmetician. I would have my red Honda that I don’t want anymore, and I’d still be dating Ricky.

The differences between those two lives in 10 years are almost opposite. In my fantasy future, I am a rich girl with a really good life, and in my realistic life I am just stuck here in Inverness.

Annual Report

One year ago today, it was May 13, 2006. I was dating Chris Russell. I had a good relationship going with him until he ruined things. This year I am dating Ricky Hooker. Things seem to be going okay. A year ago this day, I was working at that horrible McDonald’s and now I am working at Walgreens. I had a gold mustang a year ago! I now have a better car, a red Honda.

One year ago I wasn’t doing too well in school, and I have raised my GPA a lot by this year. I’m a lot happier right now than I was last year. So yes, I am better off.

Personal Narrative

On January 15, 2006, I was at my boyfriend Chris’s house. It was about 9:00 p.m. and we were going to watch Super Troopers with our friend Ethan. My mom called me from Georgia and told me to be aware that my Grandma ( I called her Bammy ) wasn’t feeling to well.

I said ok, and I blew it off like an asshole. At about 9:30 p.m. my mom called again, and said that my Bammy had passed out and she was on the way to the hospital in an ambulance right now. I started to cry and Chris walked me outside and just held me and promised me that everything would be ok. I left and I got to the emergency room before anyone else.

I walked up where the ambulances arrive, and I saw them wheel my Bammy in. She was wearing a purple robe; I will never forget that picture in my head. Everyone got there and we just sat in that horrid white room, waiting for something to happen.

The doctor called us into a private meeting in a really small room, and he told us that she didn’t make it. At that moment I was feeling like I was going to die. My Bammy was my most favorite lady in the world, and I can’t ever forget anything about her.

I felt like such a horrible person for not calling to check on her, and at least tell her that I loved her. That night was the most horrible night in the world, because my mom and dad were in Georgia, and I had to lay there alone all night crying, thinking about my Bammy.

1. Why does the author compare an investment in trust, such as the Shenandoah, to a lottery ticket?

Because the people who bought nearly $250 million in stock, owned virtually nothing that represented wealth. They were tricked in other words.

2. If the government officials knew that the stock market was heading for danger, why didn’t they take action to prevent it?

No one was man enough; many had already made a good profit off the stocks. Also they felt it was none of the Federal Reserves business.

3. What kinds of laws would you enact to protect unsuspecting investors from the traps of confidence men?

I’d make sure the people that put their money into the stocks would get everything they paid for. And they wouldn’t be wasting their money for nothing. Investment trust could not be built on top of each other.

1. Why does Terkel expect readers to laugh at his story about the senator who called the farmers anarchists and Bolsheviks?

He’s pretty much downgrading them saying they’re not intelligent enough. To laugh at their lack of intelligence.

2. How was the farmers’ resistance close in spirit to the American Revolution?

They did what they believed in, and what was right. They wouldn’t let the officers through.

3. In what sense was the Depression “farm led”?

The farmers took a lot of action against the sales of their farms. They refused to let the officers pass. Stood up in court.

4. In your opinion how justified were the farmers in protesting the sale of their farms?

They were their own justice, they completely took over. The police couldn’t stop them. They overpowered the law to get what they wanted.

What caused the crash?

1. How were the diverse interpretations of the stock market crash influenced by people’s personality and experience?

People were greedy, and wanted more then they really needed. They didn’t believe a stock market crash would occur. They let their opinions get the best of them, and when the stock market did crash, many went crazy. Even into depression.

2. On what grounds did the Brookings Institution challenge Coolidge’s argument that the crash and the Depression were caused by forces outside the U.S.?

Experts studied conditions in twenty-seven nations, including the United States. According to their report, before prosperity ended in the United States, it was terminated in eight other nations. The United States entered the Depression at just about the same time as three other nations. However, the United Stated plunged into the Depression earlier then fifteen other nations.

3. Does the author agree with Governor Huey Long’s theory about the crash? Why or why not?

I believe he does, because he goes along with the Governor’s explanation and gives more detail. And pretty much sums up what the theory means, but in his own words.

4. In what ways was the U.S. economy a flawed and loaded gun in 1929?

“When the stock market crashed, the gun did not merely fire- it exploded in everyone’s face” It was unexpected, and took everyone by surprise. There were some speculations on the stock market crashing, but many didn’t want to face the facts, and many just didn’t believe it.

1. Why do you think this song became popular among Americans who lived through the Depression?

It expresses the struggles people dealt with in the Depression. What people once had and how they ended so quickly.

All he’s dealt with in the Depression, he’s saying hey buddy, could you give me a break from this entire struggle and lend me a dime. I’ve been through a lot.

3. Why do you think this song makes reference to World War I?

Because World War I was hard to overcome. And there were plenty of struggles then. But World War I also helped get us out of the Depression by giving people jobs.

Interview with E.Y. (Yip) Harburg

1. Why was Mr. Harburg relieved when the Crash came?

Being in business was something he detested. When the crash hit, and people lost so much money, they thought their lives were over. But when Mr. Harburg lost something, he found his creativity. He felt he was being born for the first time. So for him, the world became beautiful. He was living off his imagination.

2. Why do you think Mr. Harburg said that asking for dime during the Depression made one a “dignified human being” rather than a “beggar”?

Because the man made an investment in this country, where are his dividends? A bit outraged too, as he should be.

3. How did the Crash influence Americans’ attitude toward business?

Made people realize that you should be happy with the businesses you have now. Don’t be greedy, and expect to get more with such little work put into it. Don’t think things are impossible, because it can come back and smack you in the face.

Bonus Army March on Washington

1. Who were the bonus army and why had they come to Washington?

Veterans of World War I marched to Washington to demand the passage of a bill that called for immediate payment of the bonuses they were due to receive in 1945.

2. Why can’t the speaker stick to the topic of the bonus?

He’s too busy focusing on general economic conditions of the country. He goes so off topic, and starts talking about things that people work for, but can’t even afford to pay for their own needs.

3. According to the platform speaker, whose fault is it that factories have had to close down?

The factories fault, because they can’t even give the factory worker enough money to buy what he needs.

The Biggest Thing Except for Wars

1. Why was Brown so committed to selling employers on the idea of job-sharing?

He was trying to impress upon Hoover that he had to set up an administration immediately to get after unemployment.

2. Do you think Hoover’s firing of Brown was justified? Why or why not?

I believe it was wrong, because Brown was trying to help the unemployed get jobs. And cut work hours for people, to give unemployed people a chance to work. All this to try impress upon Hoover to get to work on all the unemployed.

3. What do you think about the way Hoover handled the Depression? Do you feel any sympathy for Hoover, the “man in a hell of a hole”?

He wasn’t willing to give up money to help unemployed people, which is ignorant. And he was so confused on how the whole Depression began in the first place. He just had no clue what was going on. After all the had happened, he was just a tired old man. I personally do feel sympathy for him, but then again, I think he was ignorant for making some of the decisions he made.

Red Cross Relief...For Who?

1. What is Roger's attitude toward the Senate and Congress?

He see’s them as patriotic. Shows sorrow for them, because Red Cross is unable to reach out to them because they are so far out of reach for them to help.

2. In your opinion, is his assessment of government fair?

I understand it is harder for them to reach out to however far the Senate and Congress are. But they’re not the only ones that need help.

3. Why does Rogers emphasize the government’s patriotism?

He pity’s them the most because they are so far out of reach they are becoming forgotten throughout the depression.

Dust track on a Road

1. Why does the black man accuse Banks of being an “Uncle Tom”?

Because Banks refuses to give him a hair cut and shave his beard. And tells him to go uptown to Mr. Robins barber shop.

2. What does Hurston mean when she says that self-interest “rides over all sorts of lines”?

I think she means she starts to realize that all the same races are beginning to battle each other. In example, Anglo-Saxon against Anglo-Saxon, Jew against Jew, Negro against Negro and all sorts of combinations of the three.

3. In your opinion, did the costs of cutting the black man’s hair outweigh the benefits? Explain.

Considering everyone working at Mr. Banks barber shop are black, and the man that came into the barber shop was black. I don’t see why they wouldn’t give him a haircut. He’s one of them, no different. But I suppose the manager of a barber shop is able to serve and not serve whoever he wants.

End of the Depression

1. The WPA (Works Progress Administration) was hailed by many as a brilliant solution to unemployment. Why, then, does Piri’s father damn the WPA?

He talking to the walls and blaming himself for the depression. He’s so stressed out, he’s rambling on. He’s tired of living in poorness, tired of the cold weather, tired of crummy apartment they’re living in, tired of seeing his kids suffer, and sick of living so “damned” and not being able to do anything about it.

2. What good did it do to beat the radiators on the cold days?

It seemed like a good idea, once everyone continued the beat, it just gave everyone exercise and that kept them warm for a little while.

3. Ironically, how was Piri’s family- any many families like his- saved by World War II?

Many of the families were out of jobs, so when the war started. The army needed aids to help build airplanes, and do numerous jobs for them. So many people were hired, which helped the families because the men that were hired were being paid again and bringing home money and food to feed their families.

Term Paper

Advertising can be described as announcing or praising a product or service in some public medium of communication in order to induce people to buy or use it. There are many different ways to advertise a business, such as television commercials, business cards, bulletin boards, online advertisements, radio commercials, magazines, the side of your car, t-shirts, bulletins, airplane banners, and many more. Two types of advertising that specifically catch my eye everywhere I go are catalogs and brochures.

Almost every store in any mall around has a catalog that you can order offline to receive thru the mail, where you can view their biggest sales of the month and order thru the mail; it’s like having the entire store in your hands! One of my favorites is the ABC Distributing catalog; it is full of so many neat things for you to use around the house, or just for decoration. JC Penney’s seasonal catalogs are very widely known also, with hundreds of pages of just what people are looking for. Smaller businesses can use a smaller catalog, with about fifteen or twenty pages at the most, to help jumpstart the business by giving the town a preview. Smaller businesses use a catalog to capture the public’s attention in their area, while hoping to get more business. Advertising agencies are always high in business, because having a catalog is a great way to advertise.

When advertisers begin to construct a catalog layout, there are many things that need to be considered. They must think of what size pages to use, and how to divide the sections on each page. In each of the sections, you have to think of what pictures or text you want there, and what size to make both. Text should compliment the pictures nicely. Catalog readers and viewers always like to see attractive pictures and a manifest font. Once you figure everything out, you consult the advertising agency of your choice and go from there.

Another great way to give a sneak peek of any business would be a brochure. A brochure can easily be described as a small paper advertisement. Brochures are used as a marketing tool to advertise services or products and as an information providing tool to inform people about specific things.

When I go whitewater rafting up in North Carolina, every single place has a big stand full of different whitewater rafting places. When I was in Hawaii on Waikiki Beach, every newsstand had thousands of brochures of things to do in Hawaii. Me, being a tourist in Waikiki, every brochure was very attractive with bright colors and pretty pictures. The front made me just want to open it up and read more about it, because everything seemed like so much fun.

A brochure is usually made of a glossy paper, not a regular piece of printer paper, because it would then be known as a flyer or handbill. Brochures are usually in booklet form, folded into threes, so when you open it up, you see one full page advertisement to read all about it. When you design a brochure to sell or explain your products or services, you must remember that this brochure is going to “talk on your behalf” about your services or products that you offer. It is extremely important to make sure that your brochure gets the correct message across, is clear and, most important of all, sells or explains your product or service, which is your ultimate goal.

All in all, catalogs and brochures are a great way to advertise anything and everything. Remember to use a lot of pictures to show what you offer, and get your point across well. You can capture the public’s attention like no other.
